He Only Asked The Once

He asked for one shelf, once, about a year ago, and he has not mentioned it since.

He was not making a point. He said something like, could I have one of those shelves for my books, and he said it lightly, and you said something about sorting it out at the weekend.

And then the weekend came and went, and so did about fifty others.

His books are in two stacks on the floor on his side of the bed. You have walked past them every day for a year. He has never raised it again, and he will not, because he is not a man who asks twice.

I am not going to tell you to get premises or reorganize the house, because that is advice and there is none of it here. I am going to talk about a short instruction from Paul about looking at what belongs to other people.

Look on the things of others

There is a sentence in Philippians that is almost too short to notice, and it is about where your attention goes.

Paul is talking about how people in a household of faith carry themselves, and then he says this.

Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. (Philippians 2:4, King James Version)

You are able to look at what belongs to somebody else, and doing it has never once taken anything from you. Philippians 2:4 asks for attention to be turned toward another person's things rather than away from your own, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into an alcove where boxes are being lifted off a shelf.

Notice the word also. Not instead of. Every man also on the things of others, which means nobody is being asked to abandon their own work, only to widen the frame.

That is a small instruction and it is easy to do for strangers and much harder inside a house, because inside a house everything is already shared, and what is shared quietly becomes whoever needs it most.

You have room in your attention for his things too, and the word in that verse has never once been instead. The Spirit of God is the one who makes one sentence from a letter about unity reach a woman standing in her own alcove, and Philippians 2:4 asks for attention to the things of others without asking anybody to give up their own.

What asking once means

Let me say something about the fact that he only asked once, because that is the whole of this.

A man who asks once and never again is not a man who stopped wanting the shelf. He is a man who has decided that asking a second time would be a complaint, and he does not want to be a person who complains about your work, because he is glad about your work.

You were never refused a thing, and one question has never once been the same as no longer wanting it. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman what one unrepeated question was, and the written word asks for attention to another person's things in Philippians 2:4.

And the books on the floor are doing something you did not intend. Every day for a year they have been a small visible statement in that bedroom, and he is not making it, and you have both stopped seeing it.

He is not keeping score. That is genuinely not what is happening. But a man's things on the floor of his own bedroom for a year is a fact, and facts sit in a marriage whether anybody is keeping score or not.

You are able to settle this today, and settling it has never once cost you the work. His Spirit is the one who makes a woman able to act on a thing nobody has raised, and Philippians 2:4 widens the frame to include another person's things without narrowing anybody else's.

The whole shelf

So here is the exercise, and the size of it matters.

Clear the shelf. The whole shelf, not a section of it, and not a different smaller shelf somewhere less convenient.

You are able to clear one whole shelf today, and clearing it has never once been a loss to the work. Philippians 2:4 asks for a look at another person's things, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes one emptied shelf possible this afternoon for a woman who has walked past two stacks of books for a year.

Then tell him it is his. Plainly, in one sentence, with no apology and no explanation of why it took a year. An apology would turn it into a conversation about you.

And then leave it alone. Do not put one box back on the end of it in two months because there is space. The shelf is his now, and a shelf that gets borrowed is not given.

You were never required to hold every surface, and you are not required to now. The Spirit of God carries a woman past the slow logic that filled the alcove, and the written word asks every person to look also on the things of others in Philippians 2:4.
