You reorganized the whole workshop this week and the workshop did not need it.
It is immaculate now. Every tool is on a hook. You made a board with painted outlines of the spanners, which took a day and a half, and it is genuinely satisfying and it has nothing whatever to do with the work.
You also cleaned the van, inside and out. You wrote a list of suppliers. You went through the paperwork from two years ago and rebuilt the filing. And you have not done the actual work, the thing people pay you for, since Monday, because nothing came in on Monday.
And you are exhausted. Not tired from work. Something else.
I am not going to tell you how to fill the week properly, because that would be strategy and there is none of it here. And I am not telling you the quiet is God teaching you anything, because I do not believe that. I am going to show you what an angel brought a man who had run out.
Arise and eat
There is a scene in 1 Kings where a man at the end of himself lies down under a tree, and what God sends him is not a sermon.
Elijah has asked to be finished with it all. And here is what arrives.
And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat. (1 Kings 19:5, King James Version)
You are allowed to be given food and sleep before anything else, and that has never once been laziness. 1 Kings 19:5 has God's answer to a worn out man be a touch and a meal rather than instruction, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that to a workshop doorway with a flask and a sandwich on a crate.
Read what happens and what does not happen. No rebuke. No plan. No explanation of the situation. A touch on the shoulder and two words about eating.
And then in the next verses he eats and sleeps and is woken and eats again, and only after all of that does anybody say anything to him about what comes next. God fed him twice before He talked to him once.
You have permission to be fed before you are useful, and it has never once had to be earned first. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a scene under a tree in the wilderness reach a man sitting on an upturned crate, and 1 Kings 19:5 puts the meal before the conversation.
What the painted board was for
Let me say what the spanner outlines were, because it is not discipline.
They were a way of not sitting still. Quiet is unbearable, so a man fills it, and the things he fills it with are the things that look most like work while asking nothing of him. Nobody can be disappointed by a tidy workshop. Nobody can turn down a painted board.
You were filling a silence rather than working, and it has never once been the same thing. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man what his own week was actually made of, and the written word has God feed a man before giving him anything to do in 1 Kings 19:5.
And the exhaustion is the tell. Real work is tiring in a way that settles. This week has left you wrung out and restless at the same time, and that is the particular tiredness of a man who has been running away from a quiet room on his feet.
Nothing on your list was wrong. The board is good. It is just not what you were doing it for.
You are able to stop running, and stopping has never once been giving up. His Spirit is the one who lets a man see the difference between working and filling, and 1 Kings 19:5 answers a man at the end of himself with bread rather than with a task.
Eat, sleep, then one real thing
So here is the exercise, and the first two parts are not about work at all.
Eat something proper today. Sit down to do it. Not standing at a bench with a flask while looking at a list.
You are able to sit down and eat, and eating has never once been time taken from anything. 1 Kings 19:5 has the first word to a worn out man be arise and eat, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes one proper meal possible for a man who has been on his feet all week.
Then sleep properly tonight. Go at a sane hour. There is no reason to be up late this week and you know it, because there is no work in the diary and the late hours are not producing anything.
Then tomorrow, do one ordinary piece of the actual work. Not a project, not a tidy, not a system. The real work, the thing people pay for, done once, for nobody.
You were never required to keep moving to deserve the day, and you are not required to now. The Spirit of God carries a man from running into eating, and the written word has a man fed twice and slept twice before anybody tells him anything in 1 Kings 19:5.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.
You are cared for before you are productive, and this week has never once been a measure of you. I am not telling you when the work comes back and I am not going to suggest a way of filling the time. 1 Kings 19:5 has God answer a man at the very end of himself with a touch and a meal and no instruction at all, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who turns that from a scene under a tree into a sandwich eaten sitting down on a crate.
And this, which is the word I came with. You have food and sleep and one real thing tomorrow, and none of those has ever once had to be deserved. The written word puts the eating before the conversation in 1 Kings 19:5 and feeds the man twice before saying anything, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that possible for a man who has been filling a week on his feet. A quiet month is not God going quiet, and He is not honored by me filling the week with things that are not the work.
Eat. Sleep. Then one real thing.
Declare this over yourself
- Week I filled with the wrong things, you were never discipline and you are not staying. 1 Kings 19:5 has an angel bring bread before instruction, so by the Holy Spirit I sit down and eat in the name of Jesus.
- Fear of sitting still in a quiet workshop, you have no place in this doorway. The written word feeds a worn out man twice before anybody says a word to him, and by His Spirit I am done running from a quiet room on my feet.
- Father, You sent an angel to a man under a tree and the first thing You said was arise and eat. Your word says an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat, so by Your Spirit I eat and sleep today, and then I do one real piece of work.
1 Kings 19:5
