I Dropped It Before They Asked

You said the figure, and then before the other person had made any sound at all, you said something else.

But I can do it for less than that. Or, that is flexible. Or the worst one, which is the little laugh and then, well, we can talk about it.

Nobody asked you to come down. Nobody winced. Nobody said it was a lot. There was a gap of about half a second in which a human being was simply taking in a piece of information, and into that gap you put a discount.

And you did it on the last four jobs, and you will do it on the next one, and you know this about yourself and have known it for two years.

I am not going to tell you what to charge. That is not what this site is for and I would not know. I am going to talk about half a second of silence, because that is where the whole thing happens.

The sentence Jesus said about pay

There is a line Jesus gives to men He is sending out with nothing, and it is about what they can expect from the houses they stay in.

He tells them not to carry money or spare clothes. And then, in the middle of that, He says something about pay that is completely matter of fact.

And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give: for the labourer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. (Luke 10:7, King James Version)

You are worthy of your hire, and that has never once been a thing you had to argue for. Luke 10:7 states it as a fact in the middle of practical travel instructions rather than as an encouragement, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into the front room of somebody else's house with a tape measure in a man's hand.

Look at the tone of it. This is not a speech about valuing yourself. It is an aside. Worthy of his hire, said the way a man says the van needs fuel.

Jesus is not building their confidence. He is telling them a fact about the arrangement: work is done, pay follows, and there is nothing to be settled about it.

You have a fact underneath this, and it has never once depended on how you feel on the doorstep. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a travel instruction from Luke 10:7 land on a man who has cut his own price four times in a row, and the written word puts the worthiness of the worker down flatly with no argument built around it.

What the half second is

Let me say what is happening in that gap, because it is not generosity.

You cannot bear the silence, so you fill it. And the only thing you have to fill it with is a concession, because a concession is the one thing guaranteed to make the other person relax. You have bought your own comfort with money, in half a second, without deciding to.

You were buying two seconds of comfort, and it has never once been worth what it cost. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man what his own mouth does in a gap, and Luke 10:7 has pay spoken of as settled rather than as something negotiated in a doorway.

And here is what it does to the other person, which nobody tells you. When you drop the price unprompted, the first figure becomes a guess. They now know that your numbers move, so the number you said is not information any more, it is an opening. You taught them that.

None of that is a character flaw. It is a reflex in half a second, and reflexes can be caught.

You are not dishonest and you never were. His Spirit is the one who settles a man in the gap without turning him hard, and the written word says the worker is worthy of his hire in Luke 10:7 and leaves it at that.

Say it and stop

So here is the whole of it, and it is silence.

Say the figure. Then stop. Put your mouth shut and let the half second happen, and then the second half second, and then whatever comes after that.

You are able to let a silence sit, and sitting in it has never once been hard hearted. Luke 10:7 treats pay as a plain part of the arrangement, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes quiet possible for a man who has always filled it with a concession.

They will say one of three things. Right, when can you start. Or, let me think about it. Or, that is more than I thought. All three are normal and none of them is an attack.

And if they do ask you to come down, that is a real conversation and you can have it like a grown man. The thing we are dealing with here is coming down before anybody has asked, which is a different thing altogether.

You were never required to protect anybody from the price, and you are not required to now. The Spirit of God carries a plain figure past the instinct to soften it on the way out, and Luke 10:7 has the worthiness of the worker stated as a fact rather than as a hope.
