It Is In Every Room Now

It started on the dining table, and it was going to be temporary.

Then it was the dining table and a corner of the front room. Then the spare room, which was fair enough, that is what a spare room is for. Then the hall, because there was a delivery. Then the kitchen counter, only for a week.

And now there is one drawer in this house that has nothing of yours in it, and you could not tell me the last time the dining table was used for dinner.

Nobody has complained. That is the part I want to look at, because you have taken the absence of complaint as permission, and it is not permission, it is something else.

Your family have stopped mentioning it. Those are different things, and the second one is what happens after people conclude that mentioning it does not achieve anything.

The order in the proverb

There is a short proverb about work and houses, and its whole content is the order of two things.

Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thine house. (Proverbs 24:27, King James Version)

It is practical advice about not building a home before you have secured the means to keep one, and it is sensible, and that is not why I am bringing it here. Proverbs 24:27 is doing something else as well, and the Holy Spirit has kept it in Scripture for households like this one.

I am bringing it because of the two categories. The work is without, in the field, and the house is a separate thing that gets built. The proverb assumes there is a difference between them and that the difference has a location.

That distinction has quietly collapsed in your house, and the collapse was not a decision, and Proverbs 24:27 keeps the two things named separately, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person notice a boundary they lost without ever agreeing to lose it.

You are living somewhere that was meant to be two things, and the collapse has never once been something you chose. Proverbs 24:27 keeps the field and the house as separate categories, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person a boundary that went without a decision.

The family are not obstacles

I want to be extremely careful here, because there is a version of this article that goes badly wrong.

The wrong version says: your family need to understand what you are building. Proverbs 24:27 never once asks a household to accommodate a workshop, and the Holy Spirit is not building anybody a grievance. A person reads that and goes away with one, and starts explaining to their household why the dining table is a reasonable sacrifice, and the household nods, because what else can they do.

I am not doing that. Your family have a legitimate claim on the house they live in. It is not a claim they need to justify, and their patience about it is not the same as their consent.

And they will not raise it, because they know the work is how the household is fed, and raising it would sound like complaining about the thing that pays for everything. So they say nothing, and you take the silence as fine, and it is not fine, it is a room full of people being tactful.

Proverbs 24:27 puts the house on the far side of the work in a way that assumes the house is an actual house, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a household from becoming premises without anybody noticing.

You are living with people who have a claim, and their silence has never once been agreement. The written word treats the house as a thing built rather than absorbed, and the Spirit of God is the one who returns a household to being a household.

One surface

So the assignment is one surface, and it is deliberately not the whole house.

Clear one. The dining table, or the counter, or the arm of the sofa, or whichever one somebody in your family would name if you asked them, which you could also do.

And here is the part that makes it work: leave it clear. Not for the evening. Permanently. That surface is out of the business as of today.

It will not be enough space to matter to the work. That is the point. The clearing is not a logistical solution, it is a signal, and everybody in that house will read it correctly within about two days without a word being said.

Proverbs 24:27 assumes the house eventually gets built rather than permanently postponed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes one surface matter more than its square footage.

You are able to give one surface back, and it has never once needed to be the whole house. Proverbs 24:27 has the house built rather than indefinitely deferred, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a small physical act say something a whole family can read.
