Nobody Takes It1 Samuel 17:28

He Asks Like It Is A Hobby

This message is for the man whose relative asks after the work in the tone people use for a hobby, and means nothing in the world by it but kindness

He asked how the business was going and he said the word business with a little lift in it.

Not a sneer. You have been over it and there was no sneer. It was the tone a person uses about a model railway, or about a diet somebody is on. Interested, friendly, and slightly careful, the way you are careful with a thing you suspect might be fragile.

And you answered in the same tone. That is the bit that has stayed with you. He set the register and you matched it, and you heard yourself say, oh, ticking along, which is a sentence about a hobby.

He is your brother in law and he has never been anything but decent to you. He brought a trailer round in February and spent a Saturday helping you move benches.

I am not going to set you against your family and I am not going to give you a comeback, because there is nothing to come back at. I am going to talk about a tone of voice in the Bible.

Eliab heard the words

There is a moment in 1 Samuel where David's oldest brother speaks to him, and the thing the verse records is not the content but the anger underneath it.

David has arrived at the camp and started asking questions, and Eliab says something dismissive about sheep.

And Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spake unto the men; and Eliab's anger was kindled against David, and he said, Why camest thou down hither? and with whom hast thou left those few sheep in the wilderness? (1 Samuel 17:28, King James Version)

You are not the first person to be sized down by a relative, and it has never once changed what was actually in your hands. 1 Samuel 17:28 records the sizing down in the brother's own words and then lets the day proceed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that to a garden fence with two mugs and a barbecue going.

Those few sheep. That is the phrase. Not an accusation, just a way of putting something small.

And it was not accurate, and it also was not cruelty. Eliab had a picture of his youngest brother from years of living in the same house, and he reached for it, which is what families do.

You have something in your hands that a relative's picture of you has never once been able to reduce. The Spirit of God is the one who makes one dismissive sentence from a battlefield reach a man leaning on his own fence, and 1 Samuel 17:28 puts the brother's words down plainly and then carries straight on with the day.

The tone is not the verdict

Let me say what the lift in his voice actually was, because it is worth being accurate.

It was uncertainty. He does not know how to ask about a thing that has no office and no payslip, so he asks in the one register that is always safe, which is the register you use for somebody's interests. It is politeness without a map.

You were never being assessed, and a tone has never once been a verdict. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man what a careful voice actually contains, and the written word records a brother's diminishing sentence in 1 Samuel 17:28 without making it the truth of the matter.

And here is the part where I have to be honest with you, because one of them is usually right about something. He may also be right that you are tired, or that you have not had a week off in two years. That is a separate conversation and it is not this one.

The tone is not the verdict and the tone is also not an enemy. It is just a man with a mug who does not have the words.

You are able to hear a careful question without hearing a judgment, and the two have never once been the same thing. His Spirit is the one who lets a man hear a relative accurately, and 1 Samuel 17:28 lets a brother's words stand while the man walks on to what he came to do.

Your own register

So here is the exercise, and it is about which register you use, not his.

Answer in your own. Say the true sentence out loud, in the voice you would use for any other fact about your life. Not defensive, not amused, not matching his lift.

You are able to set your own tone, and setting it has never once been a correction of anybody. 1 Samuel 17:28 has the sizing down spoken and the day continue unchanged, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a plain answer possible for a man who has matched somebody else's register for two years.

Practice it on yourself first, today, out loud, alone. I make kitchens. I have four jobs booked. It is going all right and it is hard work. Said flat, the way you would say the van needs tires.

Then go and do an hour of the work. The answer is not really the answer. The work is the answer and it always was.

You were never required to win a conversation at a barbecue, and you are not required to now. The Spirit of God carries a man past the urge to match somebody else's voice, and the written word records a belittling question in 1 Samuel 17:28 and then simply goes on with the story.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.

You are doing real work, and God counts it whether anybody at that barbecue has the words for it or not. I am not setting you against a man who lent you a trailer and I am not going to hand you a line. 1 Samuel 17:28 records a brother's diminishing question and moves straight on to the thing that actually happened that day, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who turns that from a battlefield scene into a plain answer given over a fence.

And this, which is the word I came with. You have your own register, and using it has never once been a rebuke to anybody. The written word puts a brother's few sheep sentence on the page in 1 Samuel 17:28 without letting it decide anything, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a plain answer possible for a man who has matched a careful tone for four years. God counts this work and that is enough for it to be real, and He is not honored by me answering as though it were a pastime.

One sentence, in your own voice. Then an hour of work.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Lift in his voice when he says the word, you were never a verdict and you are not staying. 1 Samuel 17:28 records the few sheep sentence and lets the day go on, so by the Holy Spirit I answer in my own register in the name of Jesus.
  2. Habit of matching the tone I am handed, you have no place in my mouth. The written word puts a brother's small words down without letting them decide anything, and by His Spirit I am done being the one who keeps this small in a conversation.
  3. Father, You let a brother's dismissal be written down and You did not make it the truth of the day. Your word says with whom hast thou left those few sheep, so by Your Spirit I say one plain sentence in my own voice today, and then I go and work.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
