She saw your face change, and you have not told her why.
It was a Tuesday evening, the plates were still out, and you looked at your phone and then you put it down and then you were somewhere else for the rest of the night. You answered when spoken to. You did the dishes. You sat down and did not watch what was on.
And she asked, twice, and you said it was nothing, which she did not believe, and then she stopped asking because she is not a woman who pushes.
Here is the thing you have not considered. She does not know what happened. So she has filled it in, and what a person fills in is always worse than a customer moving on. By now she may have decided the whole thing is in trouble.
I am not going to tell you to protect your family from your work, and I am not going to help you get the customer back. I am going to talk about a short verse about a heavy heart and a good word.
A good word maketh it glad
There is a proverb about carrying weight and about what lifts it, and the lifting mechanism in it is almost embarrassingly ordinary.
It is one line, two halves. The weight, and then the thing that deals with the weight.
Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad. (Proverbs 12:25, King James Version)
You are carrying something heavy, and it has never once been a weakness to be stooped by it. Proverbs 12:25 names the heaviness first and treats the stooping as what heaviness does, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a kitchen with plates half cleared on the counter.
Notice the remedy is a word. Not a resolution. Not the customer coming back. A word, said by somebody, out loud, into the room.
Which means words spoken between people in a house are doing actual work. That is not sentiment, it is the mechanism the verse names.
You have a word available to you tonight, and a word has never once needed to be a solution to be good. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a one line proverb reach a man standing on the other side of his own kitchen island, and Proverbs 12:25 puts the good word where the heaviness is.
What silence hands them
Let me say what the nothing did, because it was meant kindly and it did not land kindly.
You said it was nothing in order to keep it off them. But a closed face at a kitchen table is not nothing, and they all saw it, so what you actually did was hand them the weight without the information.
You were trying to spare them, and the silence has never once spared anybody in that house. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man what his own quiet evening did to the people in it, and the written word names a good word as the thing that makes a stooped heart glad in Proverbs 12:25.
And your wife has now spent three days carrying a version of this that is much bigger than what happened. Because in the absence of the actual size of a thing, people do not assume it is small.
The children noticed too. Children always do, and they have a worse imagination than adults because they have less to go on.
You are not protecting anybody by being quiet, and you never were. His Spirit is the one who puts a plain sentence into a man's mouth in his own house, and Proverbs 12:25 makes the spoken word the means by which the weight lifts.
Tell them the size of it
So here is the exercise, and it is one sentence and it is not a confession.
Tell them what it was. A customer of four years has gone somewhere else, it knocked me more than it should have, and we are fine.
You are able to say the size of a thing out loud, and saying it has never once been putting it on them. Proverbs 12:25 has a good word act on a heavy heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that sentence possible for a man who has said it was nothing twice already.
The last clause matters and it is not a lie. You are fine. One customer leaving is not the business collapsing, and the true size of a thing is part of the information.
Then do not elaborate. Do not run through the reasoning, do not name the man, do not start explaining your own feelings in detail. One sentence and then the ordinary evening.
You were never required to carry this alone in your own kitchen, and you are not required to now. The Spirit of God carries a plain sentence past the instinct to handle everything privately, and the written word makes a good word the remedy in Proverbs 12:25 rather than a solved problem.
So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.
You are not diminished by this, and the people in your house have never once needed to guess what happened. I am not telling you to share everything and I am not going to help you get the work back. Proverbs 12:25 names heaviness honestly and then names a good word as the thing that lifts it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who turns that from a proverb into one sentence said across a kitchen island.
And this, which is the word I came with. You have one plain sentence, and saying it has never once put your weight on anybody else. The written word makes a good word the remedy for a stooped heart in Proverbs 12:25 and does not wait for the problem to be solved first, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that sentence sayable for a man who has said it was nothing twice. They left and I am not diminished, and God is not honored by me making my family guess what took the evening.
One sentence. The true size. Then the evening.
Declare this over yourself
- Word nothing that I said twice, you were never kindness and you are not staying. Proverbs 12:25 makes a good word the thing that lifts a heavy heart, so by the Holy Spirit I say the true size in the name of Jesus.
- Habit of handling it on my own, you have no place in my kitchen. The written word names heaviness plainly and then names the remedy as a word spoken, and by His Spirit I am done handing my family a weight with no information attached.
- Father, You said heaviness makes the heart stoop and a good word makes it glad. Your word says a good word maketh it glad, so by Your Spirit I say one plain sentence at my own table tonight, and then I get on with the evening.
