Two Answers In My Pocket

You have two answers ready, and you have never once chosen which one you are going to use.

There is the small one. A bit of work on the side. Something I do. Nothing much really. And there is the true one, which has the actual word in it, and a sense of the scale of it, and does not apologize for itself.

Both are accurate. That is what makes this strange. The small one is not a lie, it is just the bottom end of the truth, and you deploy it without deciding to, and you could not tell me in advance which one will come out of your mouth in any given conversation.

It depends who is asking. It depends whether they look successful. It depends whether you are tired. And you have been doing it so long that you have stopped noticing there are two.

I am not going to tell you to pick the impressive one. I am going to talk about what carrying two answers does to a man, because Scripture has a word for it and the word is not about pride.

The word for a man with two

There is a short phrase in James that names something most people would not think to name, and it is not about lying.

James is talking about asking God for wisdom, and about what happens in a man who is divided. And then he puts a word on that man, and the word is not dishonest.

A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. (James 1:8, King James Version)

You are not being accused of anything here, and the trouble has never once been dishonesty. James 1:8 names the problem as instability rather than as deceit, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that distinction out onto a cold yard where three men are standing with coffee.

Unstable in all his ways. Not wicked. Not a liar. Unstable, which means moved by whatever is in front of him, and the word covers far more than one conversation.

That is a mercy, if you read it properly. Scripture has not called you a fraud for having two answers. It has told you what the two answers cost, which is steadiness.

You have been paying in steadiness and you never once knew the price. The Spirit of God is the one who makes an old warning about a divided man land on somebody who did not know he was divided, and James 1:8 names the cost without once calling the man a liar.

What the small answer is reading

Let me say what the second answer is actually for, because it is not modesty.

It is a reading of the room. You look at the person in front of you, you make a judgment about how this is going to go, and you pick the version that will survive. It is a skill. You have got very good at it, and the cost of being good at it is that your own work has a size that changes depending on who is looking.

You were letting other people set the scale, and they have never once been qualified to. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a man what his own two answers have been doing, and the written word names a divided man as unstable in every direction in James 1:8.

And there is a worse thing underneath it. Over years, a man who shrinks his work in front of certain kinds of people learns which kinds of people he is smaller than. That is not humility. That is a ranking, and you built it yourself, and you carry it into every room.

Nobody put you in that order. You did, one conversation at a time, with the small answer.

You are not below anybody in that yard, and you never were. His Spirit is the one who takes a ranking out of a man's head without making him think he is better than anybody, and James 1:8 locates the whole problem in being divided rather than in being small.

One answer, everywhere

So here is the exercise, and it is about having one rather than having a good one.

Pick a sentence. Write it down if you need to. Then use it on everybody: your neighbor, a man at a supplier counter, your wife's boss, a stranger at a wedding. The same sentence, every time, regardless of the room.

You are able to carry one answer, and using it everywhere has never once been arrogance. James 1:8 puts the instability in the division itself rather than in the content of either answer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a single steady sentence possible for a man who has carried two for years.

It does not need to be the grand one. Honestly, it should not be. Pick the plain true one, the middle of the road, the one you would say to somebody who already knows everything about you.

Then stop adjusting it. That is the whole discipline, and it is harder than it sounds for about a week.

You were never required to calibrate yourself to the person in front of you, and you are not required to now. The Spirit of God carries one steady word past the instinct to read the room first, and James 1:8 has the divided man named as unstable rather than as humble.
