Nobody Takes ItProverbs 15:1

They Are Frightened Not Unkind

This message is for the woman who has worked out that her family are frightened for her rather than contemptuous of her, and does not know what to do with that

You worked it out in the car on the way home and you have not known what to do with it since.

They are not looking down on you. They are frightened. Your father's questions about whether it is sustainable, your mother asking twice about health insurance, your brother's thing about how nobody can rely on that sort of income. None of that is contempt. All of it is fear, wearing the only clothes fear has in your family, which is practical questions.

And it is harder this way. Contempt you could have fought. You had a whole argument ready for contempt. You have no argument for a mother who lies awake.

So now you sit at that table and you cannot be annoyed with them, and you also cannot be reassured by them, and you have nowhere to put any of it.

I am not going to set you against them and I am not going to give you a way of managing them. I am going to talk about the shape of an answer, because Proverbs says something about that.

A soft answer turneth away wrath

There is a proverb about answers that is usually quoted in arguments, and it is more useful than that.

It is about what an answer does to the temperature of a room, and it names two kinds.

A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. (Proverbs 15:1, King James Version)

You have an answer available that lowers the temperature, and it has never once meant agreeing with anybody. Proverbs 15:1 puts the power to change a room in the shape of an answer rather than in its content, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that to a kitchen table with cups and a plate of biscuits on it.

Notice what it does not say. It does not say a soft answer is a weak answer, or a vague one, or one that concedes the point. Soft is about how it lands, not about whether it is true.

And notice what it is aimed at. Wrath, in that verse, and fear works the same way. A hard answer to a frightened person produces more fear, every time, and a soft one gives them somewhere to put their hands.

You are able to give a true answer softly, and the softness has never once made it less true. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a proverb about temperature reach a woman at her own kitchen table, and Proverbs 15:1 makes the shape of an answer the thing that changes a room.

Fear asks practical questions

Let me say something about the questions, because the questions are not really questions.

Is it sustainable. What about when the car goes. Have you thought about what happens if you are ill. None of those are requests for information. They are a frightened person's way of saying they cannot see how you are going to be all right.

You were never being interrogated, and a practical question has never once been what it looked like. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman what her family's questions actually are, and the written word puts the power of a gentle answer on the page in Proverbs 15:1.

And here is the thing I have to say plainly, because it is true and because pretending otherwise would not help you. One of them is probably right about one thing. There is usually one question in the set that is a real question, and you know which one it is, and it is the one you answer fastest.

That one is worth thinking about on your own, later, without them in the room. Not because they have authority over the work. Because it might be true, and a true thing is worth having.

You are able to hear one real question without handing over the whole thing, and the two have never once been the same. His Spirit is the one who lets a woman separate a true question from a frightened one, and Proverbs 15:1 keeps the answer soft without making it dishonest.

One sentence, not a case

So here is the exercise, and it is not a conversation with them.

Say one true sentence about the work out loud. Alone, in the house, in a normal voice. This pays for the shopping. I have fourteen people who rely on me. This is my work and it is real.

You are able to say a true sentence without building a case, and it has never once needed to convince anybody. Proverbs 15:1 makes a soft answer a powerful one, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes one plain sentence possible for a woman who has been carrying a prepared argument for a year.

And then put the argument down. The one you had ready for contempt. It was built for a fight that is not happening, and carrying it into a kitchen where people are frightened will make the temperature worse.

Then go and do the next piece of the work. That is the answer to fear over time, and it is not an argument, and it is slow, and it is the only one that has ever worked.

You were never required to settle their fear before you could work, and you are not required to now. The Spirit of God carries a woman past the need to win a conversation with people who love her, and the written word sets the soft answer against grievous words in Proverbs 15:1.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.

You are doing real work, and God counts it whether the people at that table can see how it will hold or not. I am not setting you against your family and I am not going to hand you a way of managing them. Proverbs 15:1 makes a soft answer the thing that turns away wrath, without making it weak or untrue, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who turns that from a proverb into one plain sentence said in a kitchen.

And this, which is the word I came with. You have a true answer and it has never once needed to be a case. The written word sets the soft answer against grievous words in Proverbs 15:1 and puts the power in the shape rather than the volume, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that possible for a woman who has carried a prepared argument for a year. God counts this work and that is enough for it to be real, and He is not honored by me treating worry as contempt.

One sentence. Then the next piece of work.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Argument I built for a fight nobody offered, you were never needed and you are not staying. Proverbs 15:1 makes a soft answer the one that turns away wrath, so by the Holy Spirit I say one true sentence in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear I have been calling contempt, you have no place at my table. The written word puts the power in the shape of an answer and not in its volume, and by His Spirit I am done fighting people who are frightened for me.
  3. Father, You said a soft answer turns away wrath and that grievous words stir up anger. Your word says a soft answer turneth away wrath, so by Your Spirit I say one plain sentence today, and then I go and do the next piece of work.
