What Do You Do All Day

Somebody asked you what you do all day and you could not answer.

She was not being rude. She genuinely could not picture it. She works in an office with a rota and a lunch break, and what she knows about your life is that you are at home, and she asked the way you would ask about anything you cannot imagine.

And you said, oh, this and that, and then something about how the day goes quickly, and then you changed the subject, and you have been annoyed with yourself ever since.

Because you know what you did yesterday. You were up at six and you did not sit down until two. You could list it if anybody gave you a minute. You just could not produce it under a friendly question in a doorway.

I am not going to tell you to defend yourself better. I am going to ask you to write one day down, and I am going to show you a verse that takes the content of a day seriously.

She looketh well to the ways of her household

There is a verse near the end of Proverbs 31 that describes a woman's attention, and the word it uses is about looking.

The chapter is full of her activity, and this line is about how she holds it all.

She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. (Proverbs 31:27, King James Version)

You have a day with real content in it, and it has never once been idleness. Proverbs 31:27 names looking well to the ways of a household as work and sets it directly against idleness, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that to a kitchen table with a half written list on it.

Notice the phrase looketh well to the ways. Not does the chores. Looks well to the ways, which means she is holding the whole arrangement in her head and making judgments about it all day long.

And then the second half, which is there on purpose. Eateth not the bread of idleness. Scripture specifically denies that her day is empty, which means somebody, somewhere, thought it might be.

You are doing something Scripture specifically calls the opposite of idleness, and it has never once needed defending. The Spirit of God is the one who makes a line about a working woman's attention reach somebody who could not answer a question in a doorway, and Proverbs 31:27 sets the ways of a household against the bread of idleness in one sentence.

Why you could not answer

Let me say why the answer would not come, because it is not that you forgot.

A day like yours has no shape from the outside. Nobody clocks in. There is no meeting anybody could name. It is forty small decisions and eleven interruptions and four jobs half done and one finished, and all of that is genuinely hard to say in a doorway in fifteen seconds.

You were never caught out, and an unshaped day has never once been an empty one. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a woman why her own day is hard to describe, and the written word names looking well to the ways of a household as its own kind of work in Proverbs 31:27.

And there is a second reason, which is harder. You have never written it down. You do not actually have the list. You have a feeling of being busy and a sense of being tired, and neither of those can be said out loud to a person in a doorway.

A feeling is not an answer. A list is.

You are able to produce the list, and it has never once needed to be impressive to be true. His Spirit is the one who turns a feeling into something a woman can hold, and Proverbs 31:27 treats the content of a household's days as a real subject.

Write one day down

So here is the exercise, and it is a notebook.

Write down what you actually did today, hour by hour. All of it. Not a plan and not a summary. What happened, in order, in short lines.

You are able to write one day down, and writing it has never once been self justification. Proverbs 31:27 takes the ways of a household seriously enough to name them, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes one honest list possible this evening.

Include the interruptions. Include the twenty minutes on the phone to a supplier who had the wrong address. Include the thing you did twice because the first one was wrong. Those are the day, not the exceptions to it.

Then read it once, out loud, to yourself. That is the part that does the work, and I cannot entirely tell you why, except that a list read out loud in your own voice stops being a feeling.

You were never required to justify your day to anybody, and the list has never once been for them. The Spirit of God carries a true account past a woman's sense that it will not sound like enough, and the written word sets the ways of a household against idleness in Proverbs 31:27.
