Thirty Years At One Place

Your father gave thirty years to one company and he cannot hear what you do as work.

He is not being unkind about it and he has never said a cruel word to you in his life. He asks how it is going and then he asks, gently, whether there is anything coming up that is more permanent.

And he means it as love, and it is love. For him, work was a gate you went through at the same time every morning with the same men for three decades, and a pension at the end of it, and a clock. He is not refusing your version. He does not have it.

You have tried to explain it twice. Both times you watched him try very hard to follow you and then say something kind and change the subject.

I am not going to set you against your father, and I am not going to give you a way of winning that conversation. I am going to talk about a verse about fathers and children that sits right at the end of the Old Testament.

The heart of the fathers to the children

There is a line at the very end of Malachi, the last chapter of the Old Testament, and it is about a gap between generations.

It is a promise about something being turned, and the turning goes in both directions.

And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers. (Malachi 4:6, King James Version)

You are not the one who has to close this gap, and you never were. Malachi 4:6 puts the turning of hearts between fathers and children into God's hands rather than into a conversation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that into a small front room with photographs on the mantelpiece.

Notice who does the turning. Not the son, with a better explanation. Not the father, with an effort of will. He shall turn, which is God, over time, in a way nobody in the room can manage from the inside.

And notice that it needs doing in both directions, which means the distance is not one person's fault. Scripture takes it for granted that fathers and children end up needing their hearts turned toward each other.

You have a gap that God himself undertakes to close, and it has never once been yours to close with an argument. The Spirit of God is the one who makes the last promise in the Old Testament reach a man sitting with a mug in his father's front room, and Malachi 4:6 puts the turning of both hearts in God's hands.

He is not refusing it

Let me say what is happening when he asks about something more permanent, because it is not a judgment.

He is using the only map he has. Thirty years at one place taught him what safety looks like, and what he is asking about is your safety, in the only vocabulary his life gave him.

You were never being told this is not real, and a man with one map has never once been able to read another one. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a son what his father is actually asking, and the written word puts the turning of hearts between generations into God's hands in Malachi 4:6.

And here is the part I have to be honest about. He may also be right about one thing. Thirty years at one place taught him something real about what happens to a man who carries everything alone, and if there is a question in there that lands, it is worth hearing without handing him the whole of it.

But the main thing is simpler. He is not withholding approval. He is standing in a different decade with a different word for the same thing.

You are able to stop waiting for him to see it, and stopping has never once been a rejection of him. His Spirit is the one who lets a man love his father and stop needing him to understand, and Malachi 4:6 undertakes the turning of hearts without asking either person to explain themselves better.

One sentence, and a full day

So here is the exercise, and it is not another explanation.

Say one true sentence about the work out loud, on your own, in your own voice. I have work booked through November. Eleven people rely on me. This is my job and it pays for this house.

You are able to say a true sentence without an audience, and it has never once needed your father in the room. Malachi 4:6 puts the turning of hearts into God's hands over time, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes one plain sentence possible for a man who has tried to explain himself twice.

Then do not explain it to him a third time. The third attempt is the one that turns into a conversation about whether you are defensive, and you will both leave that one worse off.

Then go and do a full day. Thirty years is not answered by a sentence. It is answered by years of showing up, and the only part of that you control is today.

You were never required to be understood before you could work, and you are not required to now. The Spirit of God carries a man past the need to be recognized by the person whose recognition he wants most, and the written word promises the turning of both hearts in Malachi 4:6.
